Superior Plus Propane believes in contributing to society to improve the lives of both the people in the communities we serve and the nation at large. One of the biggest ways we do this is by being a corporate partner with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Through this corporate partnership, we donate a minimum of $50,000 annually to fund research that may one day provide a cure for the most common cancer worldwide.

What is the Breast Cancer Research Foundation?

Nearly everyone today knows that a pink ribbon means support of breast cancer awareness, but many may not know that the pink ribbon was created by the founder of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) in 1989. BCRF’s founder, Evelyn Lauder, was diagnosed with this cancer several years before she created the pink ribbon and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. As a cancer patient, Lauder believed that research was the way to treat and potentially cure this disease.

Lauder and her husband first contributed to establishing the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City in 1989. The breast center was a state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment center focused on providing the latest diagnostic, treatment and prevention services at the time. From there, she partnered with Alexandra Penney, editor of SELF magazine, to create the now famous pink ribbon. Together, with the Estee Lauder Companies, they launched the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign (www.bcrf.org.). As part of the campaign, the pink ribbons and self-breast exam instruction cards were distributed from the counters of the Estee Lauder companies. The campaign’s focus was to raise awareness and promote the importance of self-care and cancer research.

This first campaign grew, and in 2010, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation began. Currently, BCRF’s mission is to end “breast cancer by advancing the world’s most promising research” (www.bcrf.org). The foundation does this largely through donations from individuals, corporations, and organizations. “Today, BCRF is the largest private funder of breast cancer research” (www.bcrf.org).

How Superior Plus Propane Supports BCRF

Since the inception of BCRF in 2010, Superior Plus Propane has been a corporate partner, donating an annual minimum of $50,000 to this important organization. Just how do we do it? Instead of simply writing a check, we take it a step or two further to raise awareness of BCRF and cancer research. We launched our Pink Truck Initiative in 2010 to do just that.

What is the Pink Truck Initiative?

Maybe you’ve personally seen our pink trucks during October, which is breast cancer awareness month. The trucks are specially painted with pink cabs and pink ribbons to raise awareness of this common cancer. Not only do the pink trucks raise awareness, they also raise money for cancer research. For every gallon of fuel oil delivered by a pink truck, Superior Plus Propane donates $.02 to BCRF.  Since we began the Pink Truck Initiative in 2010, we have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to this important cause.  For more information on our total contribution to date, please visit Superior Plus Propane | Breast Cancer Research Foundation (bcrf.org)
