Winter Propane Safety & Delivery Tips

Superior Plus Propane
1/29/25

Winter weather can lead to extreme weather conditions, meaning higher propane use and making delivering propane difficult and sometimes dangerous. At Superior Plus Propane, our top priority is safely delivering propane to our customers.  By following the best practices below, we can prepare for winter weather, together.

Before the Snow Falls

Plan Your Propane Delivery

Winter is our busiest season, especially when the coldest temperatures and snowiest weather hits.

  • If you are an auto delivery customer, we automatically add you to our delivery schedule based on your propane usage patterns.
  • If you are a will call customer, you will need to keep a close eye on your propane tank’s gauge or monitor during the winter.
    • Schedule a delivery when the gauge or monitor reads 30%. This gives us time to ensure we can deliver to you before you run out of propane, as sometimes it might take us up to 14 business days to deliver to everyone on our schedule.

If the weather forecast is predicting a storm or long cold streak, call for a delivery in advance of these conditions so you will be added to our delivery schedule. You may place a delivery online through our customer portal at Log in – Superior Plus Propane or call your local office.

We highly recommend signing up for our Auto Delivery schedule to help stress less this winter. Check out Winter Weather Propane Delivery FAQs  for additional information.

Prep Your Property

Preparation for winter weather is the key to protecting drivers and property.  Before snow arrives, you should:

  • Flag the location of your propane tank to make sure your driver can easily locate it during snowy weather.
  • Place flags along the edges of your driveway so that the driver can clearly spot its boundaries when there is snow on the ground.  Remember, propane trucks are wider than most vehicles and will need more clearance space.

During Snowy Weather

Once the snow starts falling, or there is ice on the ground, there are several steps you can take to protect your property and ensure the safety of our drivers.

  • Clear a path to your tank(s) or cylinder(s) so that the driver can safely deliver the propane.  When clearing snow within fifteen feet of the tank(s) or cylinder(s), you should use a snow shovel only.  Heavy machinery may damage the tank(s) or cylinder(s) and their components.  When cleaning snow off of the tank(s) or cylinder(s), use a broom or brush to ensure no damage occurs.
  • Make sure your driveway is clear from snow and ice.  Propane trucks are heavy and can slip and slide easily on icy or snowy surfaces.  If there is snow on the ground, make sure to remove it from your driveway.  If there is ice on the ground, please use ice melt so that the truck doesn’t slide. Remember, delivery drivers have to descend about three feet when getting out of their trucks, so any ice can easily make them slip and fall.
  • Additionally, if you have a gated driveway, please keep your gate open to avoid the risk of it freezing shut and delaying your delivery.

How Long Should Propane Last in Winter?

We consider several factors to determine whether you have enough propane until we get there, including outdoor temperatures, your usage patterns, your tank size and whether you use propane as your primary heating source or for other propane uses. If you have a tank sensor and are on our auto delivery program, rest assured we’re monitoring your levels and will automatically schedule your deliveries.

To help make sure you always have enough propane, it’s important to update us if your usage changes (for example, if you renovate or add appliances) so that we can consider rightsizing your tank to make sure you have enough propane to match your needs. We begin scheduling deliveries when the tank level reading is approximately 30%. This gives us plenty of time to get to you. For some customers, even 10% is enough propane to last a while if the tank is the right size to match their usage.

Propane is a cost-effective and efficient energy source, particularly for heating, but there are always ways to optimize its use during the coldest months. Learn more about optimizing propane use during winter here.
