People rely on propane to fuel their everyday lives.  And while technological advances have provided us with tank meters and sensors to help prevent us from running out of fuel, the average person probably has no idea how much propane they actually use per year.  If you’re curious to learn how to get an estimate on your annual propane usage, read on!

Where to Start?

Propane usage varies greatly per household because many factors influence the amount of fuel each household uses. Things that affect propane usage are:

  • Number of people in the household
  • Square footage of the home
  • Location of the home (colder climates will use more propane in general)
  • Number of appliances using propane.

Once you have gathered this information, you can use the following guidelines to provide an estimate of your annual propane usage.

Propane Usage Guidelines

We have compiled propane usage guidelines for the most commonly used propane appliances.  See below to determine what amount of propane you can expect your home to use per year.

Propane Furnace (based on furnace usage of 4-6 months per year)

Based on the table above, the average 2,000 square foot home needing its furnace for 4-6 months per year, will use approximately 888 gallons annually.

Propane Water Heater Usage

On average, a household of four will use around 300 gallons of propane per year to run the hot water heater.  If this house is also around 2,000 square feet and has a propane furnace, then the total propane usage per year will be about 1,188 gallons per year to fuel these two items.

Other Propane Appliances

Continuing with our four-person household living in a 2,000 square foot home, if all the above-mentioned appliances are propane fueled, that household can expect to use 1,434 gallons of propane per year. Bear in mind these are approximations and will depend on how warm you keep your home, how much hot water you use, and how often you use other propane appliances like fireplaces, stoves and dryers.  A general rule of thumb is that the average home that uses propane for heating and other appliances costs roughly $2,000-3,000 annually (How Much Propane Does An Average Home Use Per Month? – UtilitySmarts).
